MTN Free After 1
Due to a directive from the National Communication Authority (NCA) regarding MTN’s significant market power (SMP) status, MTN Ghana has been forced to limit the benefits of its 25th Anniversary “Free After 1” promotion.MTN has been directed not to offer the cheapest call, data, and SMS prices on the market as part of SMP regulatory interventions. The directive is intended to allow smaller players to compete on price.
The Free After 1 promo required MTN customers to pay only 30Gp for the first minute of each call and nothing for the remainder of the time the call was active. This makes MTN’s call rates the lowest on the market, especially for those participating in the anniversary promotion.
NCA considers that promotional offer to be anticompetitive and has thus forced MTN to reduce the benefit from complete free to only 10 minutes free.
So, for those on that promotional package, which can be accessed by dialing *550#, every call will automatically drop on the 10th minute, and one must initiate a new call to continue any conversation.
MTN issued a circular as follows:
