The Ghana Union Traders' Association (GUTA) believes that rather than placing limitations on certain products, it would be wiser for the government to outright forbid their importation.
Dr. Joseph Obeng, the association's president, stressed that achieving self-sufficiency is crucial for all nations and that choosing the right path forward has grown more difficult.
Speaking to the media in Parliament on Tuesday, December 5, Dr. Obeng said that the strategy the administration plans to employ to develop the regional economy would be ineffective.
He noted that acquiring permissions is not the only factor in the performance of other companies, pointing out that some locally manufactured goods are not doing as well as one would think when the government takes similar measures.
Thus, limiting it is not the best course of action. In this period of trade liberalization, we have even made it obvious that we would prefer it if they banned the products rather than imposing limitations and obstacles on our business practices," he stated.
The president of GUTA went on to say that anything that would prevent trade facilitation and company growth would not be accepted.
In order to help the government in its efforts to boost productivity so that we will continue to support them, that is precisely what we advised the committee they should do with this L.I. In essence, that is what our nation needs.
Dr. Obeng went on to say that there would be major problems if the nation lacked produce or if it was overpriced, which may prevent sales to nearby nations.
Considering this, he emphasized that rather than placing limitations on the items, it is urgently necessary to address this issue.
He emphasized that, particularly in the context of importation, putting in place the proper mechanisms to guarantee that there are viable alternatives is necessary to achieve the nation's goals.
"As traders, you are telling us that we should have access to produce from within if you say we should stop buying from outside.
But if you haven't taken any steps to reassure us that we have the goods from within, then we are doing this whole exercise in vain," the GUTA president stated.
